New church: Back to the Word Church is being started at the Unity Church in the Woods complex off Cortez Road. Grief classes: Sarasota Baptist Church is offering classes for those who are experiencing grief over the death of a loved one and for those experiencing the pain of separation, divorce or the end of a long-term relationship. “The Messiah”: Bradenton’s First Methodist Church is seeking singers for its production of selections from “The Messiah” during a Palm Sunday service March 28. The church is offering Wednesday night classes on the history of Handel’s monumental work leading up to the performance date. Free concert: The Dunnemans, from Binghamton, N.Y., will present a free concert at Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren, 6323 13th St. Court E., Bradenton 7 p.m. Feb. 19. The Dunnemans sing their own special blend of gospel music, including southern gospel, traditional, hymns, classical, country, bluegrass and contemporary Christian styles. Women’s group: The Women’s Spiritual Growth Group of First United Church in downtown Sarasota wishes to share Finding Balance, a video-based study of New Testament women. Purim celebration: Chabad of Bradenton & Lakewood Ranch, 11509 Palmbrush Trail, Lakewood Ranch will host its sixth annual “Purim around the World” celebration with an African jungle theme at 5:30 p.m.Feb. 28. Purim commemorates the escape of the Jewish people from annihilation by the ancient Persian Empire, and is celebrated by the exchange of food packages between friends, by giving charity to the poor, by eating a traditional festive meal and by reading the story of Purim from the Megillah (Purim scroll). Male chorus: The Rockingham Male Chorus of Bridgewater/Harrisonburg, Va., will perform at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 29 at Good Shepherd Church, 6323 13th St. Ct. E., Bradenton. Men’s group: A new men’s group, The Men’s Network P.M. Edition, will begin at 7 p.m. March 3 in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church, 104 S. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota.
