Vitale family helps V Foundation raise cancer research money

It’s hard to say “no” to Dick Vitale. With just one week’s notice, he sold out a dinner at Siesta Key’s Cafe Gabbiano to raise money for the V Foundation For Cancer Research.

Owners Peter and Susan Migliaccio offered to host Tuesday night’s holiday party, donating all of the food and beverages, and their entire staff volunteered for the evening. Santa (aka John Ward) took a night off during his busy season to greet the guests by the huge Christmas tree.

The V Foundation is near and dear to Dick’s heart and he teared up a bit talking about Jim Valvano’s fight with cancer. But, he drew a laugh when he recognized Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen. He described Jamie as the man who broke the heart of Tampa Bay Rays fans.

The entire Vitale clan gathered for the dinner, including wife Lorraine, daughter Terri Vitale and her husband, Dr. Chris Sforzo, and daughter Sherri Vitale with her husband, Thomas Krug. The guest list included tennis great Nick Bollettieri and his wife, Cindi, John and Denise Saputo and Michelle and Ken Detweiler.

Sports fans, mark your calendars for May 19. The annual Dick Vitale Gala, benefiting the V Foundation, will honor Rick Pitino and Billy Donovan.
