Chivas, a senior rescue cat, is already the world's greatest big brother, and he isn't afraid to turn his game up a notch with a round of the most iconic game for babies: hide-and-seek. That's exactly how he began bonding with his new puppy sister, Hayley, when she first came home to San Francisco after being rescued in Mexico, and now it's how he's going viral, too.

As @im_hayley_comet's throwback video proved on May 31, it doesn't get much cuter than pets playing hide-and-seek-even when only one of them understands the game! Hayley may have been a two-month-old puppy when this video was taken, but her alternating confusion and excitement already had her entire family wrapped around her tiny paw.

Hayley thought her brother really disappeared! Luckily, her mama was right there watching the entire thing unfold, and it took mere moments for Haley to forget someone else was ever even there. She was just excited to see Mom!

"Poor lil girl has like zero object permanence," commenter @clarais.cala agreed. Many developmental milestones take weeks or months to fully develop, so it was only a matter of time before the tiny puppy learned to peek behind the door. For now, though, Chivas can hide from his baby sister anytime he wants.

Some viewers thought this interaction was hilarious and priceless, but others felt bad for the poor pup. Her tiny whine melted millions of hearts all at once! Her mama explained, "She still does it when she doesn't understand what's going on," which makes me wonder just how often Chivas tries to mess with his baby sister.

Introducing Cats and Puppies

Even though Hayley felt confused about this game of hide-and-seek, Chivas was the bewildered one when she first came home. He had no idea what to think about the tiny new thing wandering in his house!

There's no single right way to introduce a puppy to a cat, and letting the animals set the pace of the interaction is always the right way to go. Some pets need a gradual introduction, which means they'll need their own separate spaces for a while. Once they're used to each other from a distance, they can choose to come closer when ready.
