Sarasota County man, 57, likely drowns in canal; body recovered 90 minutes later

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the suspected drowning death of a Venice man.



Deputies responded to a reported swimmer in distress at approximately 2:04 p.m. Thursday in a canal in the Chesnut Creek neighborhood directly behind a residence at 430 Bermuda Isles Circle.

When deputies arrived, emergency personnel from SCSO as well as the Sarasota County Fire Department began search-and-rescue efforts.

Members of the Sheriff's Underwater Recovery Force Team and Aviation Unit responded to assist in the search. After approximately an hour and a half, members of the SCSO SURF Team recovered the victim's body.



Next of kin has been notified and the victim has been identified as Edward M. Stack, 57, of 430 Bermuda Isles Circle.



The investigation is ongoing.
