Key dates in Kiwanis history

Key Kiwanis dates

1922 -- Manatee River Kiwanis Club chartered by Kiwanis International.

1929 -- Funded and built three cabins at Camp Flying Eagle.

1935 -- Bradenton Chamber of Commerce asks club to build trailer park to attract tourists.

1940 -- Manatee High Key Club established.

1946 -- Boys Club founded with $7,500 budget and grant.

1950 -- Girl Scout House built on 17th Ave. W.

1953 -- Kiwanis Hall opens.

1967 -- Funded Boys Club on 34th St. W. and 53rd Ave. W., and later donated extra property.

1972 -- Trailer Park notes paid off during 50th anniversary.

1977 -- 59th Street YMCA built on five acres donated by Kiwanis.

1984 -- Property purchased on 14th St. W. for United Way.

1992 -- First woman voted into Kiwanis Club of Bradenton.

1994 -- Kiwanis Club of Bradenton Foundation started.

1997 -- Trailer Park sold to park residents for $8.8 million and $50,000 given to new Manatee Community Blood during 75th anniversary.

2010 -- $65,000 grant to Take Stock in Children.

2011 -- Christmas in August event launched. 10,000 meals packed for Kids Against Hunger.

2012 -- $250,000 to Manatee Performing Arts Center, 20,000 meals packed for Kids Against Hunger, 90 $1,000 scholarships awarded in addition to regular awards.
