Manatee man arrested after baby swallows Oxycodone

MANATEE — A 38-year-old Manatee man has been charged with child neglect after a 1-year-old boy in his care tested positive for Oxycodone at a local hospital Wednesday night, the sheriff’s office reports.

Willard Hutson Jr.’s fiancee returned from a doctor’s visit for a back injury at about 6:30 p.m. to find the child awake in the same bed where Hutson was sleeping.

The child was unsupervised, according to the report, and was seen with pills lying all around the room.

The mother picked up the child, who became lethargic as she held him, the report said.

The child was given a cold bath in an attempt to wake him up, the report said, but the bath didn’t work.

About 20 minutes later, Hutson woke up and drove the child to the emergency room at Manatee Memorial Hospital, where he caused a disturbance and was ordered to leave by the Bradenton Police Department, the report said.

The child was later transferred to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg where he tested positive for Oxycodone and was treated, the release said.

No word on his condition has been released.

Deputies later arrested Hutson at his residence on an outstanding federal warrant.

After being read his rights Hutson said the child was left in his care, the report said, but that he didn’t remember anything other than waking up when his fiancee came back from her doctor’s visit.

Hutson is being held in Manatee County jail without bond on an outstanding federal warrant, a forfeiture for aggravated domestic battery and on one charge of child neglect.
