Local organizations give back to community

Organizations: AmeriCorps VISTA/Boys & Girls Clubs/Harllee Middle School

The mission: Three AmeriCorps VISTA members are helping to spur a redevelopment of the community garden at Harllee Middle in Bradenton. They spend an hour or two with some of the kids in the Boys & Girls Club after school Tuesdays and Thursday, working on the garden and educating them on gardening, plants, agricultural planning and more.

One specific need: The children need gardening supplies. Some specifics: garden hose, garden gloves, watering cans, weed-blocking landscaping cloth, garden tools (shovel, rakes, trowels, forks, etc.) and seeds/plants.

Why it’s important: “Children are the future,” said Elizabeth Sibell-Field, of the VISTA members. “Kids need to have role models. And they need to learn different types of things like growing your own food, eating nutritious foods. It’s a holistic form of education.”

How you can help: Items can be brought to Harllee Middle, 6423 Ninth St. E.
