Along the water’s edge Friday at Lido Beach, Catch, a young adult loggerhead sea turtle, was returned to the Gulf of Mexico after spending 18 months at Mote Marine Laboratory. Catch was rescued in the waters off Sarasota in August 2009 by the charter fishing boat “Big Catch” of the Sarasota-based Flying Fish Fleet. Catch had an abundance of barnacles on his shell and was unable to dive. When the barnacles were removed, two large deep wounds were discovered, likely from a boat’s propeller. After treatment and rehabilitation -- plus a little time for Catch’s shell to harden -- he was carried by Mote staff and volunteers to the shores of Lido Beach, where a crowd of people gathered and cheered as he crawled back into the water.
