Swimmers enjoy the water at Manatee Public Beach as heavy equipment works Thursday to sift through sand and clear debris from the area where the Manatee Public Beach pier once stood. The old concrete pier was torn down in 2009 after it was deemed unsafe. “At present, there are no concrete plans to build another pier, unless it can be proven that a pier would help to control erosion,” said Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore. If it is determined that a pier will help control erosion, a new pier could be built through beach re-nourishment funds, Whitmore said. The pier was originally built in the mid-1960s.
