MANATEE -- One pedestrian was killed and another seriously injured late Saturday in a hit-and-run crash along Whitfield Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Killed in the 10:18 p.m. crash at Whitfield and Tuttle avenues was Brenden Edward Barnes, 15, of Sarasota. Samuel E. Garvin, 16, also of Sarasota, was seriously injured, the report said.
Garvin was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, according to the report.
The two were walking west in the westbound bicycle lane when a vehicle veered into the bicycle lane and hit them, the police report said. The vehicle’s right front side struck Barnes and Garvin. with Barnes’ body falling into the westbound lane of Whitfield Avenue, while Garvin’s body was thrown along the north shoulder of Whitfield Avenue, the report said.
No skid marks were found at the scene and the vehicle left the scene, the police report said.
Garvin described the hit-and-run vehicle as a black- or dark-colored sport utility vehicle with right front damage, last seen heading westbound on Whitfield Avenue.
