MANATEE — A fight over a doughnut between a homeless couple landed the man in jail.
According to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report, Richard Carothers Jr., 24, was at the Sweetbay in the 5800 block of 14th Street West and got into an argument with his girlfriend of six years over the bakery treat.
A witness flagged down a deputy after he saw Carothers swinging at his girlfriend.
When interviewed by the deputy, the woman told him she was not injured, but was afraid Carothers would beat her up, according to the report.

The report also states the couple recently lost their home and were living on the street.
Carothers, who has a history of domestic violence according to officers, was arrested on a charge of attempted domestic assault and booked into the Manatee County jail.
As of tonight he remained there on $2,500 bond.
