MANATEE — Authorities continue to investigate the slaying of a 22-year-old man in his brother’s home on Manatee Avenue West, but no arrests had been made as of late Wednesday.

Kyle Schweitzer, died after he was hit by a gunshot fired late Monday night through the front door of his brother’s home in the 7800 block of Manatee Avenue West. Schweitzer had run into the home to avoid three men who had ambushed the brothers in the front yard.

At about 11:45 p.m., Schweitzer and his 27-year-old brother had been standing in front of the house with a friend and a pit bull dog, when three men approached.

Schweitzer’s brother and friend ran away from the house, while Schweitzer fled into the home, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Someone opened fire, killing the dog and sending a bullet through the door and hitting Schweitzer.

The men briefly entered the home but left without taking a small amount of marijuana and thousands of dollars detectives found in the house, sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said.

Two women and a child in the house were unharmed, Bristow said.

Detectives were still investigating whether the shooting is related to the drugs and money found in the home, Bristow said.

“Until we have someone and they tell us, it would just be speculation what the motive might have been,” he said.

“We are still checking on the drug angle.”

Anyone with information on the shooting can call the sheriff’s office at (941) 747-3011, or Crimestoppers at (866) 634-TIPS.
