One killed, one hurt in Bradenton crash

BRADENTON — A 35-year-old man was killed and a 24-year-old woman was critically injured in a Bradenton traffic crash early this morning, according to police.

The accident happened just after midnight at the intersection of 17th Avenue West and 43rd Street West.

Bradenton Police Traffic Sgt. Brian Thiers said it appears a man was driving a Honda Accord and another man was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck with a woman inside, both traveling west in the 4100 block of 17th Avenue West.

One of the vehicles veered into a yard, knocking over trash cans. The Accord and the truck then collided at the intersection with 43rd Street West, with the Honda coming to a rest facing east.

Debris littered the roadway and a broken tire and axle from the Accord rested in a yard.

The pickup continued into about the 4400 block of 17th Avenue West, before crashing into a couple of trees and rolling, Thiers said.

The passenger, Ashley N. Hohneister, 24, of Bradenton was flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

The driver of the truck, identified as Jason A. Evangelista, 35, of Bradenton, was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived on scene, according to authorities.

The driver of the Honda Accord was Blair W. Hohneister Jr., 27, of Bradenton.

A woman who lives on 17th Avenue West said she and her son were awakened by the vehicles speeding down the street.

“Apparently it was making a sucking sound almost like an air conditioner. They were flying,” she said.

The crash remains under investigation, Thiers said.
