The Pittsburgh Pirates conducted their first full-team workout of the spring Tuesday at Pirate City.
About 100 fans looked on as the Pirates ran through drills, watching players such as rising star outfielder Andrew McCutchen, former Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura and Lakewood Ranch graduate Lastings Milledge, a native of Palmetto.
Fans also got a chance to catch a glimpse of legendary Pirates Bill Mazeroski and Manny Sanguillen, as well as former manager Chuck Tanner, who piloted Pittsburgh to the 1979 World Series title. The Pirates start exhibition play March 2, when they face the State College of Florida at 12:05 p.m. at McKechnie Field.
The two-time defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies come to McKechnie for the official home opener at 1:05 p.m. March 6.
