The Manatee Community Foundation will receive $2.5 million from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to help foster an “informed, engaged” community, MCF Executive Director Marilyn Howard said.
The funds — MCF will receive $1 million this year and $250,000 in each of the next six years — are part of the Knight Foundation’s $70 million Community Foundation Initiative in communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers.
Grant seekers in Bradenton will apply for funding through the MCF. An advisory committee in Bradenton will guide the use of the funds, which are meant to ensure that community members have the information they need to make decisions about their lives.
The Bradenton Herald was purchased by Knight Newspapers and became part of Knight Ridder in 1974. The McClatchy Co. bought Knight Ridder in 2006.
