Autopsy of burned, dismembered man completed

MANATEE — Authorities say an autopsy of a Sarasota man found burned and dismembered off U.S. 41 on Wednesday has been completed and has provided detectives with some answers as to how he died.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dave Bristow said the autopsy of Roy Barnes Jr., 35, showed a preliminary cause of death, but he declined to say how Barnes died.

“The autopsy showed us some things,” he said.

Detectives have been tight-lipped on the investigation into Barnes’ death since Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue firefighters found his dismembered body on fire behind businesses in the 7900 block of U.S. 41, adjacent to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.

At 6 a.m., a motorist spotted what looked like a “rubbish fire” and called firefighters, who got closer and discovered it was a body on fire. Bristow said a motive for the killing is still under investigation.
