FHSAA votes unanimously to rescind schedule cuts

The Florida High School Athletics Association on Wednesday voted unanimously to rescind April’s cuts to high school sports schedules.

In April, the board voted to slash varsity schedules by 20 percent and subvarsity sports by 40 percent — a measure that drew the ire of a parent equity group, which alleged the board violated Title IX and discriminated against women because the game cuts excluded football and competitive cheerleading.

Six parents of female student-athletes filed suit against the FHSAA this summer, and the group, named Florida Parents for Athletic Equity, filed for a temporary restraining order and injunction against the cuts.

The threat of litigation led the board to undo the cuts on the recommendation of Roger Dearing, the former Manatee County School Superintendent.
