Evan Longoria will not play in tonight’s All-Star Game in St. Louis.
The Rays third baseman, voted to the American League starting lineup by the fans, has an infection in the ring finger of his right hand. The infection is not thought to be serious, and the Rays expect Longoria to start Friday night in Kansas City when the season resumes.
Texas Rangers third baseman Michael Young will replace Longoria in the lineup. Angels utility player Chone Figgins has been added to the American League roster.
Longoria is the second Ray ever to be voted to the All-Star Game. Jose Canseco, who was voted in as the American League designated hitter in 1999, was the first.
Like Longoria, Canseco missed the All-Star Game because of a back injury that required surgery the Sunday before the game.
