The audience responded with sounds of excitement as the lights were dimmed in the gymnasium at Electa Arcotte Lee Middle School. Clarinetist Jessica Villafane and the rest of the advanced concert band were lit by a single glowing light as the haunting sounds of music from the Phantom of the Opera swelled in the darkness. It was part of the school’s spring band concert, where students got to show off their talents. With the end of the school year approaching, many students across the county will have the opportunity to share their musical skills in concerts like this. During the past nine months, through hours of practice, nerve-racking tests, numerous classes, and rehearsals, students and teachers have woven a tapestry of music, that puts smiles on parents faces, and shoes on the feet of their children’s dreams.
