School breakfast, lunch prices may rise

MANATEE — Local school breakfast and lunch prices may see a hike next year.

That’s because tonight during its regular meeting, the Manatee County school board is scheduled to consider raising those costs for the third straight year.

Board members will discuss increasing student and adult breakfasts by 10 cents and lunches by 15 cents, according to information from the district’s meeting agenda.

If the board approves raising food costs, elementary student lunch will jump from $1.75 to $1.90, secondary student lunches will rise from $2 to $2.15 and adult lunches will change from $2.65 to $2.80.

Elementary student breakfasts could rise from $1 to $1.10 and secondary student breakfast could jump from $1.10 to $1.20. Adult breakfasts would be $1.60 instead of $1.50.

According to Sandy Ford, the district’s food services director, the increase was set before school officials saw the effects of a 24 percent increase in food prices during fiscal year 2007.

The anticipated new revenue for the program would save the district about $300,000 next year, officials say.

Records show Manatee schools have raised the cost of some school-provided meals each of the past two years.
