Sheriff: Palmetto 'cleaning lady' stole more than $100K in jewelry

MANATEE - A woman hired to clean a northwest Bradenton residence stole more than $100,000 in jewelry from the house, and then pawned some of the items for a fraction of their value, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Lisa G. Payne, 45, of the 4700 block 15th Avenue East, Palmetto, was arrested Wednesday on charges of grand theft over $100,000, defrauding a pawn broker and dealing in stolen property. Payne, who advertised her house cleaning service in the Bradenton Herald, is accused of stealing jewelry from a Bradenton residence which she was hired to clean this past Monday, according to an arrest report.

The items taken included a diamond ring valued at $89,000; an emerald ring valued at $12,825; and diamond drop earrings valued at $5,000, bringing the total take to $106,025. Also reported stolen was a broken gold necklace, according to the sheriff's office.

Payne pawned the emerald ring and the gold necklace for a total of $120. The diamond ring was found in a dresser drawer during a search of Payne's residence, according to the report. Payne told investigators she took the diamond earrings during an earlier visit to the victim's house.

The voice mail greeting on Payne's telephone said her business is called "Lisa's House Cleaning and More."
