MANATEE — Patients younger than 25 years old can get tested for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV at Planned Parenthood’s Oneco clinic for $5 in May.
The offer represents a $100 value, Planned Parenthood officials said.
The $5 fee covers tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia and the rapid HIV test that can provide results within 20 minutes.
The $5 special is made possible through a grant from the Manatee Community Foundation and coincides with Planned Parenthood’s national campaign to get young people tested for STDs.

“The Manatee Community Foundation recognizes the significant public health risks of STDs and HIV and the need to raise awareness of these issues particularly with our youth,” said Marilyn Howard, executive director.
The $5 testing campaign is timely, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control study that found that 1 in 4 teenage girls has an STD and that by age 25, 1 in 2 sexually active young people will get an STD.
Manatee has one of the highest STD rates in Florida with 260 teens being diagnosed with either gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis in 2008.
Of the approximately 19 million new STD cases that occur every year in the United States, most go undiagnosed and many have no symptoms, the Planned Parenthood release said.
The $5 tests are available at Planned Parenthood’s health center, 1105 53rd Ave. E., Suite 201. The clinic is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
