Cops: Manatee jail inmate 'pummels' guard

MANATEE — An inmate at the Manatee County jail has been charged with beating a guard unconscious in his cell.

Sheriff’s reports say Friday the corrections deputy was making routine checks of cells when inmate Steve Hunt, 38, attacked him. Hunt punched the deputy in the face several times sending him to the ground.

Hunt then jumped on the deputy and continued to “pummel” the guard in the face, according to sheriff’s reports.

The deputy suffered a broken jaw, broken left eye socket and broken orbital bone and had to be flown from the jail by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for treatment of his injuries.

Deputies charged Hunt with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, in addition to a crack cocaine possession charge for which he was initially jailed. He was being held without bond.
