PALMETTO — Repaving work that has closed the Green Bridge Fishing Pier in Palmetto on weekdays is progressing ahead of schedule.
The pier could be open to the public again as early as today, according to Palmetto Public Works Director Allen Turing.
“They are making great progress in giving the public a better pier,” Turing said Monday.
The $45,000 repaving project is being funded in part by a $33,300 Florida Recreation Development Assistance grant, with the balance coming from the city’s capital improvement fund.

Workers are repaving the concrete pier, which over time has developed cracks, as well as widening handicapped ramps and replacing the concrete ramps with asphalt, Turing said.
The work on the 700-foot pier began Wednesday and will be completed at the latest on Friday. City officials opened the pier to the public for the weekend.
“The pier was opened over the weekend for the public to enjoy it,” said Turing. “We have it scheduled to be closed through Friday if we need it, but we hope it will be done sooner.”
