Sheriff's office: Man's shooting was suicide attempt

MANATEE - A 55-year-old man shot himself in the head and then tried to drive himself to a local hospital Monday afternoon. He only made it as far as downtown Bradenton.

The man told detectives that he had tried to commit suicide, according to the sheriff's office.

The Bradenton Police Department originally had reported that the man, whose named was not released, was shot by another motorist somewhere on U.S. 41. However, police detectives turned the case over to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office after they determined the shooting had not happened in the city.

In a news release this morning, the sheriff's office said the man shot himself in his residence in the 1700 block of 69th Avenue West and then tried to drive to a local hospital. Manatee Memorial Hospital is about a dozen blocks from where the man was found in his Cadillac, in the 800 block of Eighth Avenue West.

Bradenton Police Deputy Police J.J. Lewis said today the man had told detectives he had been shot by another motorist on U.S. 41. Lewis said he did not know whether the man would be charged with giving false information to police.

Lewis said that once the man recovers from his injuries, detectives will again interview him to determine why he originally reported that he had been shot by someone else.

Bristow said sheriff's detectives found evidence in the man's residence that the shooting was self-inflicted.

The man is currently in stable condition at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

Anyone with information on this case can call the sheriff’s office at (941) 747-3011, or Crime Stoppers at (866) 634-TIPS.
