Woman arrested on bank robbery charge

MANATEE — The girlfriend of convicted bank robber Michael Derek Johns has admitted to helping plan two Manatee bank robberies and driving a getaway car from one, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Sheriff’s detectives arrested Johns, 44, and his girlfriend Lori D. Davis, 34, at a Bradenton motel Monday after detectives obtained warrants to arrest Johns.

Johns is accused of robbing a SunTrust Bank branch March 12, in the 5700 block of 14th Street West, and a First Bank branch the next day, in the 400 block of 53rd Avenue West.

Sheriff’s reports say Davis rode in a taxi with Johns to the SunTrust robbery, waiting in the car in the parking lot. She also drove a getaway car from the First Bank robbery, according to sheriff’s reports.

Both Johns and Davis admitted to planning the robberies and sharing in the money, according to sheriff’s reports.

Johns had recently been released from federal prison for bank robbery convictions after being sentenced to 11 years behind bars for five Orlando robberies. During a two-week rash of bank robberies in 1995 in Orlando, Johns became known as the “Brown Bag Bandit.”

Johns has been charged with two counts of robbery and is being held in the Manatee County jail on $2 million bond. Davis was initially arrested on outstanding warrants on charges of not showing up in court on a DUI charge. She now has also been charged with one count of robbery. She is being held in jail without bond.
