Cops arrest suspect in 2 Manatee bank heists

Detectives have arrested Michael Derek Johns in connection with two bank robberies last week, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office

At about 2:30 p.m. today, Johns, 44, was located and arrested without incident at a motel in the 3500 block of First Street West, Bradenton, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Lori D. Davis, 34, was also arrested on an unrelated charge and will be questioned in connection with the bank robberies.

In the robbery of a SunTrust Bank branch in the 5700 block of 14th Street West, detectives say Johns presented a teller a note demanding money and he fled with cash. In a hold-up of the First Bank branch in the 400 block of 53rd Avenue West, Johns ordered a teller to fill a bag he had with money, according to sheriff’s reports.

Johns has already served prison time for bank robbery charges in the past. He was recently released from federal prison in September after serving about 17 years, according to sheriff’s reports.

Anyone with information about the robberies can call the sheriff's office at (941) 747-3011 ext. 2552, or Crimestoppers at (866) 634-TIPS.
