Man charged with beating boy, 6, with broom handle

MANATEE — A 26-year-old man used a broom handle to break a 6-year-old boy’s arm and to beat him about the head and face, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Frantzi faces a charge of aggravated child abuse.

Detectives say Frantzi on Wednesday punished the boy by hitting him several times with a broom handle. At least one blow to the boy’s left arm fractured a bone. He also was struck about the head and face, leaving him with bruises, swelling and abrasions on both sides of the face, according to a sheriff’s office report.

The child was treated and released from a local hospital.

Frantzi was later arrested without incident.

Sheriff’s officials said the boy lives with Frantzi in the 4500 block of 68th Street Court West, where the alleged abuse occurred, but they did not say whether they are related.
