ELLENTON -- An affordable apartment complex that was the site of a double shooting in May has been sold to a new owner.
On Sept. 16, a Largo buyer spent $6.6 million to purchase The Oaks of Ellenton, a 168-unit apartment complex that rents under a low-income housing agreement with the Florida Housing Finance Corp.
According to Manatee County property records, Largo-based My Apartment Choice bought the 16-acre property at 1626 34th Ave. E.
The property is one of two multifamily complexes the company owns in Manatee County.
In April, the company purchased the Elm Lake Apartments, a 64-unit complex at 6318 14th St. E. in Bradenton, for $2.5 million. Elm Lake is also an affordable apartment property.
The much-larger Oaks was built in 1994. According to ForRent.com, the rental complex offers one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Rental amounts range between $595 and $810 per month. Amenities include a swimming pool and a children's playground.
My Apartment Choice owns eight apartment buildings in Florida, according to its website. Its other properties are located in Tampa, Orlando, Lakeland and Clearwater.
My Apartment Choice founder Benjamin Mallah did not immediately respond to a request to comment on his company's latest purchase.
On May 5, a man and a woman suffered non-life- threatening injuries in a shooting at The Oaks of Ellenton. A Florida state trooper heard the shots, then pursued a vehicle that left the apartment complex at a high rate of speed. The vehicle evaded the trooper,
but later crashed. Suspects in the car ran away.
Law enforcement found drugs in the car, but no firearms.
A pond at The Oaks was later searched for the weapon used in the shooting, but none were found.
No arrests have been made, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
