Retired baseball player sells Holmes Beach inn

HOLMES BEACH -- An 11-unit inn on Anna Maria Island owned until recently by former professional baseball player Gary Sheffield has sold for $2.55 million.

Sheffield, who played in the outfield for more than a half dozen Major League Baseball teams, sold the Anna Maria Island Beach Resort on May 22. The buyer is a corporation registered to a Tampa law office.

Located on the beach overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, the 6,400-square-foot inn was built in 1973. During the summer season, room rates run between $165 and $235 per night, according to the inn's website.

The selling price was far less than what Sheffield paid for the property. He bought it in 2005 for $4 million.
