If you're in the mood for good-timey soft rock written and performed by a former professional surfer, Jack Johnson isn't your only choice.
Donavan Frankenreiter, a old buddy of Johnson's from the surf circuit, plays similarly insouciant music. There's a bit more of jazz and even light R&B touch to Frankenreiter's songs sometimes -- some people say he sounds a bit like Jamiroquai -- but basically, if you like Jack Johnson you'll probably like Donavan Frankenreiter, too. (Johnson performs with Frankenreiter often, as does their mutual friend G. Love. They put out an EP together in 2005 called "Some Live Songs.")
Frankenreiter will perform tonight at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg.
Besides his music, Frankenreiter is known for his pleasant stage persona and the feel-good vibe at his concerts. And for his Magnum P.I.-style mustache.
You may have heard Frankenreiter's music without even knowing it. His song "Lovely Day," which he recorded with Koool G. Murder of the band Eels, was featured on the soundtrack of the 2006 film "Snakes on a Plane" and the following year's "Georgia Rule."
