The press material for Saturday events at the Bradenton Area Convention Center in Palmetto boasts that it will include spills, body-slams, back-drops -- and that it's "family-friendly." So if you want to watch "giants, colorful characters and women's action" with your kids, you'll want to make sure to attend "Lucha Libra Espectacular" Saturday evening.
It promises to a be a pretty fun evening for fans of TV wrestling. The superstars of Mexican professional wrestling are performing in Florida for the first time, right here in Manatee County.
There's going to be a full slate of fake-violent action, culminating in a main event that features television stars Dr. Wagner Jr. and Silver King doing battle.
For those of you who may not be familiar, "lucha libre" means "free wrestling." It's a lot like professional wrestling in this country, but there's a lot of emphasis on masks, aerial maneuvers and tag-team matches, with three wrestlers on a team.
Lucha libre is enormously popular in Mexico, and its popularity has reached the United States through Spanish-language television and through such movies as "Nacho Libre," which starred Jack Black.
Details: 7:30 p.m. June 27, Bradenton Area Convention Center, 1 Haben Blvd., Palmetto. Tickets: $25-$40. Information: 941- 722-3244, bradentongulfislands.com/bradenton-area-convention-center.
