It's not often you get to see Mark Twain, Shirley Temple and Janis Joplin in the same show.
The Players Theatre in Sarasota begins its Summer Sizzler series this weekend with a brand-new show called "Icons." It's a revue, written by Players artistic director Jeffery Kin and Berry Ayers, that features songs and skits from superstars from all genres of entertainment going back more than a century.
The cast of 20 includes performers that will be familiar to anyone who frequents local theater -- including Manatee players favorites Sarah Cassidy and Alan Opie -- and they play legendary figures from pop music, Broadway, movies, television and more. Among the "stars" who make appearances in "Icons" are Bette Midler, Tina Turner, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, ABBA, Queen, Mae West and Lucille Ball.
The Summer Sizzler Series also features productions of Paul Rudnick's comedy "I Hate Hamlet" and Terrence McNally's "Master Class," a Tony Award-winning drama about Marie Calles. A series ticket, which includes admission to all three shows plus three $10 gift certificates for Caragiulo's Italian Restaurant in Sarasota, costs $35.
Details: June 11-21, The Players Theatre, 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Show times: 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $18. Information: 941-365-2494, theplayers.org.
