There's a world series for just about everything these days, from fighting and poker to something called "team roping." There's even speed dating. Oh, and there's one for baseball, too.
One of the most entertaining, and certainly the funniest, comes to Florida for the first time this week.
A regional leg of the World Series of Comedy will be at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre in Sarasota for six shows starting today.
The World Series of Comedy is now in its sixth year, and organizers say it's the biggest comedy competition in the country.
Hundreds of comedians compete in six regional contests all around the country. Audiences vote for their favorites, and the winners go on to a national competition in Las Vegas. The ultimate winner this year will get gigs at 50 comedy clubs around the country.
Just making it to the regional competitions is a big deal. Only 40 comics are chosen for each region.
They may not be household names just yet, but they're all professional or semi-professional stand-up comics, and they're chosen by panels of other pro comics and comedy booking agents.
There are 40 comics competing show, so each concert will be feature a different lineup.
Details: May 27-30, McCurdy's Comedy Theatre, 1923 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota. Show times 7 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Tickets: $15-$19 Information: 941-925-3869, mccurdyscomedy.com.
