Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee announced it will celebrate the delivery of 9 Million Meals Served on June 8, 2010. Reverend Kenneth Barr, accompanied by Meals on Wheels PLUS President/CEO Ellen Campbell, will make the special delivery of a hot, nutritious meal to a local homebound senior. Following the delivery, Meals on Wheels PLUS will host a luncheon celebration at the main office of 811 23rd Avenue East in Bradenton, beginning at 12:00 PM.
The public is invited to join Meals on Wheels PLUS Board Members, staff, and volunteers as they celebrate the special nine million meal accomplishment. Guests can enjoy live music, enter to win door prizes, and sample a variety of client favorite dishes, freshly prepared by the Meals on Wheels PLUS kitchen staff, with Grandma’s Goodies cookies for dessert. The event also includes the dedication of a new walk-in cooler/freezer made possible by grants from the Selby Foundation, Manatee Memorial Hospital , and joint WalMart/Meals on Wheels Association of America Foundation grant. Local businesses who contributed to the completion of the project include Goodson Electric, Manasota Commercial Construction, and Trident Roofing.
“We could not have reached this special Nine Million Meal accomplishment without the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the ongoing support of the local community,” said Ellen Campbell , CEO of Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee. “Senior hunger is a serious issue, and we encourage all who attend our event to join the national effort to end senior hunger by 2020.”
According to a research study by the Meals on Wheels Association of America, there are more than 6 million seniors facing hunger. Their goal is to have 6 million people from across the nation join them in the pledge to end senior hunger by the year 2020. Taking the pledge means committing to leading a fund drive, volunteering, making a donation, or generating awareness of the problem.
