ISLAND FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY PROGRAM: CHARLES DARWIN LECTURE, FEBRUARY 17

The Friends of the Island Branch Library welcome Dr. Tim Berra to the Library on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010.

A two-time Fulbright Fellow, Berra is Professor Emeritus of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at Ohio State University, author of the 1990 book “Evolution and the Myth of Creationism” and most recently, “Charles Darwin: The Concise Story of an Extraordinary Man.”

Dr. Berra's lecture on Charles Darwin is part of the Library's Alice Taylor Reed Lecture and Travel Series.

The program will be presented at 2:00 p.m. Seating is limited and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. There is no advance registration required.

FRIENDS OF THE CENTRAL LIBRARY: DR. JOHN MELLON, FEBRUARY 23

Join the Friends of the Central Library as they welcome Dr. John Mellon to the library for a truly unique program. Mellon will offer his wonderful insights into AN APPRECIATION OF WALLACE STEGNER'S NOVEL, "CROSSING TO SAFETY."

Published in 1987, the book is a sensitive exploration into the lives of four friends--their enduring love for one another, and their intertwined relationships over the course of several decades.

Dr. Mellon, a retired college professor and former president of Colorado's Western State College has been a frequent and popular guest speaker at the library. Presenting talks on a wide array of subjects over the years, his insight and eloquence always delight audiences.

This informative program will be offered on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 starting at 2:00 p.m.

The event is free and seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis. There is no advance registration required.

PALMETTO FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY WELCOME PAUL STONEBRIDGE, FEBRUARY 23

The Palmetto Friends of the Library are calling all teens to the library for a special program on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00 p.m.

Paul Stonebridge will be on hand to present TRAVELS IN JAPAN, a journey through the culture of ANIME, MANGA, RAMEN, and HELLO KITTY. Paul's dynamic program will also include a FOOD TASTING of Japanese treats!

A very popular guest of libraries around the state, Stonebridge is the Teen Services Manager for the Pasco County Library System.

The program is targeted to young adults, ages 11-18, although everyone is welcome to attend. Seating for this free program will be available on a first come, first serve basis. No registration is necessary.

MANATEE COUNTY BRADEN RIVER BRANCH LIBRARY PROGRAM FOR TEENS: COLLEGE “TOUR," FEBRUARY 23

Manatee County’s Braden River Branch Library is pleased to announce a special program for TEENS featuring DEBRA LANDESBERG, a certified college resource specialist.

The informative program will be held at the Braden River Branch Library on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Seating is free and will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

Open to all, Landesberg's COLLEGE “TOUR” program will provide college-bound teens tips on how to design their resumé, create a great college essay, find financial aid and scholarships, and choose the “right” college.

Landesberg founded the College & Career Resource Center for the Manatee County School District. She has guided more than 2000 students through the search, preparation, application, and financial aid processes for colleges and universities throughout the state and around the country. FRIENDS OF THE ROCKY BLUFF LIBRARY PROGRAM: ASOLO PLAY READERS PRESENT MIXED EMOTIONS, FEBRUARY 25

The Friends of the Rocky Bluff Branch Library are pleased to welcome the Asolo Theatre Play Readers, who will entertain the audience with their performance of “MIXED EMOTIONS” on Thursday, February 25th at 2:00 p.m.

Written by Richard Baer, who enjoyed a long career as a television screenwriter, MIXED EMOTIONS follows a mature couple who have been friends for over thirty years. Herman and Christine, both now widowed, stumble into an improbable and sometimes-humorous courtship.

Seating for this free program will be available on a first come, first serve basis. No registration is necessary.

PALMETTO FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY WELCOME NOVELIST SARAH COLLINS HONENBERGER, FEBRUARY 27

The Palmetto Friends of the Library are pleased to welcome award-winning novelist SARAH COLLINS HONENBERGER to the library on Saturday, February 27th at 10:30 a.m.

Honenberger’s novel “Catcher, Caught” was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest. Her first novel, “White Lies: A Tale of Babies, Vaccines, and Deception” was nominated for the 2006 Library of Virginia Fiction Award, and her second novel, “Waltzing Cowboys” was an Editor’s Pick on Bookviews.com.

Copley News Service writes: “Honenberger is a gifted storyteller, a master of nuance who knows how to move you deeply; how to lift your heart; how to grab your attention and hold it.”

With numerous awards for her short stories and a fellowship from the Virginia Creative Arts Center, she appears regularly on literary panels and book festivals in addition to teaching creative writing since her retirement as a divorce and custody lawyer in rural Virginia.

Seating for this free program will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Everyone is welcome to attend, and no registration is necessary.

The Friends of the Island Branch Library welcome Shelley Massey to the Library on Saturday, February 27th, 2010.

Massey will discuss the allure of Costa Rica's rainforests, volcanoes, exotic wildlife, mountains and beaches as part of the Alice Taylor Reed Lecture and Travel Series.
