JANUARY – APRIL 2010
The Friends of the South Manatee Branch Library are pleased to announce a series of special events that will be held at the library from January through April, 2010. Saturday, January 16, from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will present a GENEALOGY WORKSHOP. Debbie Duay and Lucy Cole of the DAR will help attendees to work on their family trees. Bring your family's birth and death records, marriage certificates, family Bibles and other documentation for this informative program! Thursday, January 21st, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. The Friends will hold a FRIENDS APPRECIATION PARTY “Open House” for members of the Friends --and anyone interested in becoming a Friend of the Library. Wednesday, February 10th, starting at 2:00 p.m. Linda O'Connor-Levy, the Manatee County Library's Outreach Services Supervisor will present “THE LIFE OF HENRY MORRISON FLAGLER: AMERICAN TYCOON.” Responsible for much of the early development up and down Florida's Atlantic Coast, Flagler's final audacious project extended our state some 100 miles “into the ocean” via a chain of bridges to Key West. Thursday, February 11th, starting at 6:30 p.m. Clay Cole presents SH-BOOM! THE EXPLOSION OF ROCK 'N ROLL 1953 - 1968. The Emmy-winner, writer, director and producer will discuss his experiences bringing Early Rock and Roll to television. As host of the eponymous Clay Cole Show from 1959 until 1968, his guest performers included the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, and Blood, Sweat and Tears, among many, many others. Wednesday, March 10th, starting at 2:00 p.m. The Friends present their own version of ANTIQUES ROADSHOW. Attendees are welcome to bring a maximum of two items for appraisal (no watches, jewelry, coins or stamps). Wednesday, April 7th, starting at 2:00 p.m. A very special performance by “S.O.U.L.” (Singers of United Lands). This quartet of professional young adult singers will bring high-quality vocal musicianship to the library --along with geographic and cultural diversity, as each of the four singers hails from a different country. Seating for these events will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Advance registration is not necessary for any of the programs EXCEPT the March 10th Antiques program. Please call the library to reserve your place at this event. Special programs such as these are made possible by funds generously provided by the Friends of the South Manatee Branch Library. The Friends are a support organization for Manatee County’s South Manatee Branch Library. Monies raised by the Friends go toward programs and services that tax dollars alone cannot provide.
