Steel Panther performs in St. Petersburg on Saturday
Even if you're a metal head, you've got to admit that the poses of musicians in the genre have sometimes gotten pretty silly, especially in the glam metal and hair band era.
Steel Panther began to gain attention on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, the birthplace of glam metal, about 15 years ago, when they were known as Metal Skool. They've lasted a lot longer than most metal bands -- or most rock bands in general -- by making fun of glam metal and the people who played it.
They'll be at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on Saturday.
The band's parody act would wear thin, except that they're really fine musicians and they have some great songs (despite such titles as "Fat Girl (Thar She Blows)."
The same lineup's been together for 15 years. Singer Michael Starr and guitarist Satchel were in a precursor to Steel Panther starting in the early '80s. Bassist Lexi Foxx and drummer Stix Zadinia have been with the band since 2000 and 2001, respectively.
Steel Panther released a live acoustic DVD/CD set in February titled "Live from Lexi's Mom's Garage."
Details: 9 p.m. April 30, Jannus Live, 200 First Ave N., St. Petersburg. Tickets: $24 and up. Information: 727-565-0550, jannuslive.com.
