Sarasota's Players Theatre announces season

The Players Theatre in Sarasota has announced its 2015-16 season. It's packed with classic shows that have been around for decades, and with well-known recent shows, but they're all Players premieres.

"Players has never produced any of these shows," said artistic director Jeffery Kin. "That wasn't intentional. After we picked the shows I went back through the history and discovered that we had never done any of these shows before. That was a surprise. I certainly would have thought we would have done 'La Cage' and a couple of the others."

The Players' 86th season kicks off Sept. 3 with Tennessee Williams' intense drama "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the Pulitzer Prize winner from 1955.

It continues with "The 39 Steps," a popular recent stage version of the Alfred Hitchcock film that uses only four actors.

Three familiar musicals -- "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "She Loves Me" and "The Drowsy Chaperone" -- follow.

Those are followed by "Hands on a Hardbody," a musical based on a documentary about an endurance competitions. (The contestants try keep their hands on the body of a pickup trick as long as possible.) Trey Anastasio of the band Phish co-wrote the music.

"La Cage aux Folles," the popular musical based on the popular movie, opens in March of next year and "The Smell of the Kill," a well-received dark comedy from 1999 that hit Broadway in 2002, wraps up the season.

Several types of season subscriptions are now on sale, with prices from $98 to $122.50. Single tickets run between $25 and $30. The Players Theatre is as 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Call 941-365-2494, or go to theplayers.org.
