Def Leppard, REO Speedwagon, Tesla perform together in Tampa
From the mid-1980s through the early 1990s, there was no bigger rock ’n’ roll band in the world than Def Leppard. The five members started off learning their instruments together as friends in Sheffield, England, and created two of the highest-selling albums of all time (”Hysteria” and “Pyromania.”)
Perhaps most impressive was that the band stayed together, and largely intact, through the firing of a founding guitarist, the death of the other founding guitarist, well-chronicled alcohol problems of three members and the loss of the drummer’s arm in an automobile accident.
Def Leppard is still together, with all of the classic lineup, except Steve Clark, still playing together. Vivian Campbell joined the band after Clark’s death in 1991.
They’ll be headlining a concert in Tampa on Monday night, along with two other bands that enjoyed huge popularity right around the time that Def Leppard hit its commercial peak.
REO Speedwagon had been a moderately successful band through several albums in the early ’70s, and then hit its stride with “You Can Tune a Piano But You Can’t Tuna Fish” in 1978. That sparked a string of hit albums and singles, including “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Roll With the Changes” and “Take It on the Run.” The current lineup includes founding keyboardist Neal Doughty and singer Kevin Cronin, who has been with the band since its peak years.
Tesla was a popular band in the heyday of MTV, with such hits as “Signs” and Love Song.”
