The Florida Gators are back in the rankings.
They might be able to stay there a while, too.
The 13th-ranked Gators (6-0) jumped into The Associated Press college basketball poll Monday after wins against rival Florida State, then-No. 2 Michigan State and Rutgers last week.
Florida snapped a three-year losing streak against the Seminoles, upset the Spartans three days later and then beat Rutgers on Saturday in the championship game of the Legends Classic in New Jersey. It was the program’s biggest week since cutting down the nets in Atlanta after a second straight NCAA championship in April 2007.
“The biggest thing is going to be to have a level of humility, and hopefully through past experiences, these guys can deal with the fact that we had a great week,” coach Billy Donovan said Monday. “But like I’ve told those guys: Is that all we’re playing for, to have a good week?
“The goal is how do we improve and how do we get better because we still have a lot of room for improvement.”
Florida hosts Florida A&M (0-7) tonight, and has games remaining against No. 8 Syracuse, Richmond, South Alabama and North Carolina State before beginning SEC play.
WOMEN’S POLL — Dayton jumped into the AP women’s Top 25 for the first time in school history, while Connecticut remained a unanimous No. 1 for the 19th consecutive poll.
MEMPHIS — The NCAA Committee on Infractions wants its punishment of the university upheld because schools need to be punished when they use ineligible players.
OBITUARY — Former Williams College men’s coach Al Shaw has died at age 102.
