Freshman John Wall had 21 points and 11 assists as No. 4 Kentucky dominated visiting Rider 92-63 on Saturday in the Cancun Challenge.

Patrick Patterson added 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-0). The team hardly looked like the one coach John Calipari called the “worst” defensive team he’s seen in 20 years after wins over Miami (Ohio) and Sam Houston State earlier in the week.

Kentucky held Rider (2-2) to 31 percent shooting, blocked 10 shots and forced the Broncs into 20 turnovers.

(9) DUKE 104, RADFORD 67 — Freshman Andre Dawkins scored a season-high 20 points, and the host Blue Devils matched a school record with 18 3-pointers in a romp against the Highlanders (2-1).

Nolan Smith added 20 points and Jon Scheyer had 18 for the Blue Devils (4-0). They overwhelmed Radford during a first half in which they shot 50 percent, matched the school record with 13 3s in a half and put this one away with a huge run.

VIRGINIA-COMMONWEALTH 82, (17) OKLAHOMA 69 — Jay Gavin scored 20 points, Larry Sanders 17, and the host Rams never trailed in an upset of the Sooners (1-2).

The victory spoiled the return of Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel, who used to coach the Rams.

Leading by one early on, the Rams (2-1) used a 20-8 spurt to take control of the game. VCU hit six straight 3-pointers during the run, including two by Gavin.

(19) GEORGETOWN 63, SAVANNAH ST. 44 — Jason Clark scored a career-high 14 points, and four Hoyas were in double figures as visiting Georgetown (3-0) rolled to a victory against overmatched Tigers (2-2).

Greg Monroe added 13 points for Georgetown, Austin Freeman had 12 and Chris Wright 11 in a game that gave the Hoyas a much-needed breather after they squeaked past Temple 46-45 on Tuesday.

(20) LOUISVILLE 69, E. TENNESSEE ST. 56 — Edgar Sosa scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half, and the host Cardinals (2-0) beat the Buccaneers (1-3).

Louisville won despite shooting just 36.4 percent, including just 6 of 30 from beyond the 3-point line. The Cardinals used an 18-0 run in the first half to turn a three-point deficit into a 25-10 lead.

(23) ILLINOIS 94, PRESBYTERIAN 48 — Freshman D.J. Richardson scored 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to help the Illini overcome a sluggish start and beat the Blue Hose (0-3) in the Las Vegas Invitational.

State men

FLORIDA ST. 89, MERCER 50 — Deividas Dulkys scored 14 points to lead the visiting Seminoles (3-0) past the Bears (3-2).

Dulkys shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range for the Florida State. Chris Singleton added 14 rebounds, while Solomon Alabi, Xavier Gibson and Jordan Demercy scored 12 points each.

MISSISSIPPI ST. 67, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 51 — Jarvis Varnado scored 10 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and became the all-time leading shot-blocker in the Southeastern Conference as the Bulldogs (2-1) beat the visiting Wildcats (1-3).

With four blocks, Varnado reached 413 to pass Shaquille O’Neal of LSUwith 412.

Women’s Top 25

(9) XAVIER 59, (14) ARIZONA ST. 46 — Freshman Katie Rutan made three consecutive 3s during a first-half run that put the Musketeers (2-0) ahead to stay and had a steal and layup that ended the Sun Devils’ (2-1) comeback.

(7) LSU 72, HOUSTON 54 — Freshman reserve Adrienne Webb scored 17 points to lead the host Tigers (3-0) past the Cougars (3-1).

LSU senior guard Allison Hightower scored 16 points and Katherine Graham had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Turnbow added 12 points for LSU.

(20) OKLAHOMA 74, TCU 70 — Abi Olajuwon, the daughter of former NBA star Hakeem Olajuwon, scored a career-high 23 points, and Danielle Robinson added 16 as the host Sooners (2-1) got past the Horned Frogs (2-1).
