BRADENTON — John Ryan Murphy’s professional baseball career began in his backyard.
And it began with a bang.
A recent graduate of the The Pendleton School and a Bradenton native, Murphy went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored to in the Gulf Coast League Yankees’ 5-0 win over the Pirates on Thursday at Pirate City.
The New York Yankees took Murphy with the 42nd pick of the June draft and signed him Monday.
Thursday marked his first GCL game. With his parents, Mark and Carolina, brandishing a camcorder and camera, Murphy got his first professional hit — a soft single to right that plated a run — during his second at-bat.
A catcher, Murphy served as the designated hitter Thursday and batted third. He is expected to spend the rest of the season with the GCL.
