The Tampa Bay Rays could send their entire infield to St. Louis for the All-Star Game if first baseman Carlos Peña wins the “Final Vote,” the online campaign to select the final roster spot. Peña is competing with Chone Figgins, Brandon Inge, Ian Kinsler and Adam Lind. Fans have until 4 p.m. Thursday to vote for the final All-Star at MLB.com.

Should Peña not make the cut, he could be the first player to lead the American League in homers and not make the All-Star team since Detroit’s Mickey Tettleton in 1993.

Oh, those kids

For the third time in team history, the Rays were beaten in three consecutive games by rookie pitchers: Toronto’s Ricky Romero (Wednesday) and Texas’ Tommy Hunter (Friday) and Derek Holland (Saturday).

Stat of the day

4: What else? The team-record number of All-Stars named Sunday to the American League team. The Rays are sending more position players to the All-Star Game than any other major league team. Their four All-Stars are one more than the Yankees for those who keep tabs on such things.

Up next

The Rays have another off-day today as they prepare for a six-game homestand that leads to the All-Star break. The Rays and Toronto Blue Jays start a three-game series Tuesday night that is highlighted by a Roy Halladay-David Price matchup Thursday afternoon.
