The Tampa Bay Rays have signed outfielder/designated hitter Pat Burrell to what is believed to be a two-year, $16 million contract. An announcement from the team is expected later Monday afternoon.
The 32-year-old Burrell batted .250 with 33 home runs and 86 RBIs last season for the Philadelphia Phillies. His seventh-inning double led to the winning run in Game 5 as the Phillies captured the World Series title with a 4-3 victory over the Rays.
Burrell gives the Rays the right-handed power hitter they sought this offseason.
