Bradenton's Mickey Hooke recently competed in the 2012 RRCA Florida 5K State Championship, which used the ninth annual Broward County Firefighters 5K as the designated race. Hooke finished fourth overall out of roughly 1,000 runners in Hollywood Beach. He clocked in at 17 minutes, 33 seconds to set a new grandmasters record for the course.
The result turned in the 2012 RRCA Florida 5K Grandmasters State Championship as well as a course record at the age of 51.
Youth football results
The East Manatee Bulldogs and Manatee Mustangs squared off against each other in Saturday's Foundation for Youth Development Pop Warner football games.
The always powerful Mustangs won the Junior Pee Wee (42-0), Pee Wee (28-0), Junior Midget (34-8) and Midget (34-0) games, but dropped the Mitey Mites division
match up 25-20.
In that Mitey Mite contest, the visiting Bulldogs remained undefeated and received a three-touchdown game from Ethan Bement, while Josiah Lozada chipped in another score. Thus far, the Bulldogs Mitey Mites have outscored opponents 123-65.
In the Junior Midget game, the Mustangs handed the Bulldogs their first defeat in 2012. Quarterback Cody Staton connected with Niklas Traylor for a 52-yard touchdown as the only points for the Bulldogs, while Matthew Strauss reached double-figures in tackles on defense for the fourth time this season. Noah Benghuzzi also aided a defense that yielded 34 points to the high-powered Division I Mustangs.
Taivon Derisma scored a TD in the Tiny Mites 12-6 loss to the Mustangs. Joseph Hills, Will MacKinnon, Dustin Shields, Tucker Hickman, Joseph Hannaseck, Brock McCue and Mason Wright helped out on the offensive line.
Meanwhile, other programs had mixed results.
The Palmetto Trojans ran off two victories at home against the Northeast Tampa Pirates. They won 12-0 (Mitey Mites) and 21-0 (Midgets).
Also north of the river, the North Manatee Storm defeated the Pinellas Park Rebels 38-7 in a Pee Wee division game at Buffalo Creek Park. However, the Storm fell to the Rebels 30-6 (Mitey Mites), 32-0 (Junior Pee Wees) and 20-6 (Midgets) in the other games.
And the Manatee Wildcats battled the Hardee Wildcats at Hardee High, splitting four games.
Manatee won 28-0 and 29-0 in the Mitey Mite and Junior Midget games, respectively.
Hardee captured the Junior Pee Wee (32-25) and Pee Wee (26-12) match ups.
The Run to Live 5K and Family Fun Run is scheduled for Sept. 29 just south of University Parkway. The event benefitting The Center for Building Hope is being held at the center at 5481 Communications Parkway. It costs $35 for the 5K race and $10 for the Family Fun Run.
Participants receive official race T-Shirts (limited to the first 500 registered), activities for children and two draft beer tickets from World of Beer for runners over the age of 21.
