Manatee School for the Arts sophomore Nick Neri is one of 10 rising stars aiming to make it to the top ranks of professional racing, according to the magazine Autoweek.
Earlier this month, Neri was spotlighted in the magazine along with nine others.
He said he was “honored to be acknowledged in this way by such a prestigious magazine,” according to a news release.
Neri has over 300 victories and 26 championships as an accomplished Go-Kart racer, according to his web site www.nickneri.com.
Tigers rowers do well
Palmetto, Southeast and Manatee High competed in the Sarasota Invitational Regatta this past weekend.
The Tigers claimed medals in several events.
In the boys novice eights, Palmetto won the gold with coxswain Emily Whisenant and her crew of Mitch Maloney, Trevor Lovett, Clayton Flournoy, Riley Thornton, Marcello Falcetti, Zach Perrine, Josh Dawson and Gus Brouwer.
The Tigers (Cox: Sarah Jefferies, Brandi Achenbach, Erin Monaghan, Brooke Mailloux and Stephanie Brouwer) took silver in the girls junior varsity fours.
In the boys novice double, Palmetto’s Todd Chastain and Michael Mohler grabbed bronze.
Whisenant was the coxswain with Mohler, Jensen Newhall, Chastain and Beau Wessel in the boys junior varsity fours team that won silver.
And Palmetto capped the event with a bronze in the boys junior varsity eights. Whisenant, Luke Myhree, Newhall, Jerome Robinson, Grant Fletcher, Mohler, James Burton, Chastain and Wessell earned that medal.
Southeast placed fifth in the boys double.
Manatee finished fifth in both the mixed fours and girls double.

Bayshore High’s Canaan Meester-Kitterman keeps on trucking along.
The Bruins cross-country standout ran a time of 35:41 to claim the overall men’s title in the 10K race of the Take Stock in Children 10K/5K/Fun Run in Lakewood Ranch this past weekend.
Other 10K male division winners were: Danny Joseph (Masters, 36:04) and Jim Shields (Grand Masters, 38:50).
On the women’s side, Lakewood Ranch High star Olivia Ortiz clocked in at 37:13 for the overall female title.
Other 10K female division winners were: Jodi Mailman (Masters, 46:57) and Kim Gibson (Grand Masters, 51:41).
Eric Ray, of Riverview, won the 5K portion’s overall men’s title with a time of 17:57.
Rob Hetterich (Masters, 21:04) and Jeff Williams (Grand Masters, 23:43) won the other male divisions.
Another standout on Lakewood Ranch’s cross-country team, Kristin Zarrella, took the 5K’s women’s title with a time of 19:12.
Peggy Robinson (Masters, 19:49) and Lisa West (Grand Masters, 28:14) also won titles in the other female divisions.
