Baseball: Coghlan, Bailey win rookie honors
NEW YORK — Chris Coghlan and Andrew Bailey both agreed to change, then quickly got their chance in the majors. Now each has a rookie reward that will last forever.
Coghlan, the pesky Florida Marlins leadoff hitter, won the National League Rookie of the Year award in a close vote Monday, and Bailey took the AL honor after an outstanding season as the Oakland Athletics’ closer.
“I couldn’t have written it better,” Coghlan said during a conference call.
ELSEWHERE — Utilityman Eric Bruntlett, who scored the winning run in the final game of the 2008 World Series, became a free agent after refusing a minor league assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies. ... Catcher Ramon Hernandez agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Reds after Cincinnati declined his $8 million option. ... Wally Backman was hired as manager of the New York Mets’ Brooklyn Cyclones farm team in the New York-Penn League ... New Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta picked Tim Tolman as the bench coach, Steve Smith as third-base coach and Scott Radinsky as bullpen coach.
NCAA football: Michigan staff in hot water again
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan released embarrassing details of an internal audit Monday that discovered Rich Rodriguez’s team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season — his first — and the offseason last spring.
Perhaps coincidentally, the NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues. The NCAA sent the school’s president a notice of inquiry last month, saying it plans to complete its investigation by Dec. 31.
ELSEWHERE — San Jose State’s Dick Tomey is retiring from coaching, effective following the team’s game against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 5. ... Two of three Tennessee freshmen players charged last week in an attempted armed robbery have been dismissed from the team. ... Syracuse freshman kick returner Mike Jones and reserve tight end/snapper Dalton Phillips will miss the final two games of the season with injuries. ... Penn State backup tailback Brandon Beachum will miss the rest of the year because of a right knee injury. Girls soccer: Palmetto reaches new heights
PALMETTO 3, RIVERVIEW 1 — The Palmetto girls soccer team beat visiting Riverview on Monday night for the first time in the program’s history.
All it took was a hat trick by Sammie Mathews, who provided all the offense in the victory. Keeper Paige McFarland had five saves to keep the Tigers perfect at 6-0. Megan Petterson, Irene Gallardo and Autum Jordan had assists.
MANATEE 7, SOUTHEAST 0 — Ally Titsworth did it all for the Manatee girls soccer team Monday.
Titsworth scored a hat trick and tallied an assist in the visiting Hurricanes’ 7-0 blanking of Southeast. Then she moved to goalkeeper, making one save while playing the final 20 minutes of the game in net.
