Another game, another victory for Bradenton Prep. Make that 17 straight.
The Patriots continue to steamroll through their schedule, the latest win a 26-8 result at Florida Christian Institute.
As he has all season, junior Jared Williams led the offensive assault with 204 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries. His scores came on runs of 45 and 4 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Zach Hammond was 16-for-21 passing for a season-best 249 yards and one touchdown, a 12-yard hookup with Zach Gratton in the third quarter to cap the scoring.
Gratton added a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter, and Ed Brown opened the scoring with a safety.
Mike Curry was the primary receiver weapon, catching seven balls for 117 yards.
The lone downside on the night: The Patriots gave up their fourth kickoff return for a touchdown this season.
“I think we’re just going to do onside kicks for the rest of the year,” joked coach Joe Hammond. “We might be better off.”
Bradenton Prep’s winning streak is no laughing matter. It is easily the program’s longest such streak in its four years of existence. Its last loss was in week two last year against Cardinal Mooney.
“We understand that we just have to play one game at a time,” Hammond said.
Next up: Bradenton Prep (8-0) hosts Jacksonville Temple Christian next Friday night at 7:30.
TAMPA CATHOLIC 42, CARDINAL MOONEY 3 — For the Cougars, it’s been one negative hit after another this year.
But despite countless injuries and a flu bug, “There’s no excuse,” head coach Josh Smithers said after the Cougars’ latest defeat, their fifth straight.
“I thought we played pretty hard tonight and I don’t think the score is indicative of the game,” Smithers said.
Things looked fairly promising in the first half for Cardinal Mooney.
After a 39-yard field goal by Porter Windom cut Catholic’s lead to 7-3, the Cougars recovered an onside kick.
Cardinal Mooney (2-5, 0-3) completed a pass inside the Catholic 20 on a reverse on the ensuing play, but a clipping penalty nullified the gain and pushed the Cougars back 15 yards. From that point, it was all Catholic.
Cardinal Mooney plays next week at Clearwater Central Catholic.
FORT MYERS EVANGELICAL 48, SAINT STEPHEN’S 14 — The visiting Falcons fell to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in Class 1B-District 6. Saint Stephen’s resumes district play next week at Naples, where the Falcons face St. John Neumann.
