BRADENTON -- Ryan McMahon scored 19 of his game-high 32 points in the first half Friday night as Cardinal Mooney handed the Bradenton Christian boys basketball team its second loss of the season 77-49 in Class 3A-District 10 play.
"I just sat back and surveyed the defense. I took what they gave me and attacked," McMahon said.
The Panthers (7-2, 2-1) found themselves down 16 at the half and unable to climb back.
"We just couldn't get into a rhythm tonight offensively for whatever reason," Bradenton Christian head coach Scott Townsend said.
The Panthers were led by Ryan Leunk's 13 points, while J.T. Noellert chipped in 10.
The Cougars (7-0, 3-0) forced Bradenton Christian into a lot of jumpers, not allowing easy baskets for most of the night.
"We just tried to keep them from feeling comfortable out there; we know how good that team is," Mooney head coach Stefan Gates said.
With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers went to a full-court press, which was at times successful but not enough to get BCS back into the game.
"We were missing a few guys tonight. I would have loved to go press earlier, but I knew we wouldn't have been able to sustain the energy," Coach Townsend said.
Cardinal Mooney took its foot off the gas to start the third quarter, allowing the Panthers to get within 11.
"When you have a double-digit cushion, sometimes you tend to let up," Coach Gates said. "I reminded the guys how this team can go on a quick run and make it a tight game."
The Cougars took their coach's advice and closed out the game convincingly. Blair Perry added 15 points for Cardinal Mooney.
